The Power of Work-Life Balance: A Key to Success, Even When You Own the Company

Having recently started working with a coach, I was asked – why did you go out and open your own company?

Me: Because I knew I could change the way recruitment is done, and to gain freedom both financial and time.

Coach: Okay, so how many hours/days do you work?

Me: Too many.

Coach: So does it feel like you have obtained freedom?

Me: Um…good question

In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship, the notion of work-life balance often seems like a distant dream. As business owners, the demands of our companies can be all-consuming, leaving little room for personal time and relaxation.

Lots of people leaders, managers and entrepreneurs find themselves making every excuse to be the busiest person they know, but there is a big difference between being busy and being productive. Having recently reassessed my business plan due to staffing changes I have spent a solid 6 weeks re-aligning my vision and goals for this company. 2 years into my entrepreneur journey I have had some great success. I have also made some poor decisions as well, some of this being management related, and some being business process related. I am certainly not perfect and I make a point to learn from every road-block that is presented. I know I am made for this journey and without adversity you cannot learn to pivot, assess and adapt.

What if I told you that embracing work-life balance is not only possible but also crucial, even when you own the company? In fact, it might be the secret ingredient to your success.

1. Increased Productivity and Creativity
One of the most significant advantages of maintaining a healthy work-life balance is the boost it provides to your productivity and creativity. Stepping away from work allows your mind to relax, recharge, and gain new perspectives. Often, the best ideas come when you are least expecting them – during an outdoor walk, while pumping out some leg weights at the gym, while spending quality time with family, or simply when you are at peace. Creating this mental space can lead to innovative breakthroughs that can drive your business forward.

2. Enhanced Decision-Making:
Balancing work and personal life fosters clarity of thought. When you are well-rested and mentally rejuvenated, your decision-making abilities are significantly improved. Sound decisions are the foundation of a successful business. By striking a balance, you empower yourself to make thoughtful, informed choices that can impact your company positively.

3. Health and Well-being:
Entrepreneurship is undoubtedly demanding, but neglecting your health and well-being can have serious consequences. Chronic stress and burnout can lead to a decline in physical and mental health, ultimately affecting your ability to run your business effectively. By prioritising self-care and allocating time for exercise, relaxation, and hobbies, you are investing in your most valuable asset – yourself. A healthy entrepreneur is a resilient entrepreneur.

4. Setting an Example:
As a business owner, you are a role model for your employees and your greater circle. Demonstrating a healthy work-life balance not only sets a positive example but also fosters a company culture where well-being is valued. This, in turn, leads to higher employee satisfaction, increased retention rates, and a more motivated workforce. Happy and content employees are more likely to go the extra mile, enhancing the overall productivity and success of your company.

5. Achieving Long-Term Success:
Success is not just about short-term gains. It’s about building a sustainable, enduring enterprise. A crucial aspect of achieving long-term success is maintaining your own well-being over the long run. Embracing work-life balance ensures that you have the stamina, creativity, and resilience to navigate the challenges that come your way, allowing your business to thrive in the face of adversity.

Some of the ways I have demonstrated the above have been:

  1. Moving to a 4 day work week and limiting weekend work activities to one hour
  2. Turning my phone on do not disturb from 6.30pm and not touching it after 8pm
  3. Meditating and journalling which has helped my sleep
  4. Engaged an naturopath to help ensure my body is operating at peak levels by getting an idea of my current state (full bloods to be taken today)
  5. Taking time out each day for a mindfulness recharge – including a walk, shopping, coffee with a friend
  6. Trusting intuition when new ideas come flowing, and putting them into action

After implementing these elements into my daily life, I am sleeping better, thinking clearer and feeling less guilt in my personal life. Work-life balance is not a luxury reserved for employees; it is a powerful tool that every business owner should love. By taking care of yourself, you are not only ensuring your own success but also creating a positive impact on your company and the people around you. So, let’s redefine success – not just in terms of revenue and growth but also in terms of personal fulfilment and well-being. Together, let’s build businesses that thrive and entrepreneurs who flourish.

If you’re a budding entrepreneur who would like to sound out your ideas, or reach out just for a chat, I’m always here.

Wishing you the best balance possible in this journey!
